How Many Countries Have You Visited? Count Them Automatically
It sounds like an easy question. Someone asks how many countries you've been to, and you start counting on your fingers — and somewhere around a dozen you lose track, double-count a layover, or completely forget the trip you took before you owned a smartphone.
The honest answer is most people don't actually know. 52 does, because it counts for you — automatically, from the photos already on your phone.
Why counting from memory never works
Tallying your countries by hand fails for predictable reasons:
- You forget places. Short trips, border crossings, and old travels slip out of memory entirely.
- You're not sure what counts. Does a long layover where you left the airport count? The country you only drove through?
- The number keeps changing. Every new trip resets the count, and you never go back to update your mental tally.
A number you reconstruct from memory is a guess. A number built from where you actually took photos is real.
How 52 counts your countries
52 reads the location data in your camera roll and turns it into an exact count:
- Every country you photographed is counted once. No fingers, no guessing, no double-counting that layover.
- Borders are resolved precisely and on-device. 52 knows which country each photo was taken in using map boundaries bundled on your phone — so even close calls near a border are exact, and your location history never leaves the device.
- It counts retroactively. Your total isn't built from today forward — it's drawn from your whole existing library, so years of travel are included from the moment you open the app.
- It shows the percentage of the world you've explored. Beyond a raw number, 52 puts your count in context — how much of the map you've filled in, and how much is still out there.
More than a number
The count is a great party answer, but it's the doorway to the rest of your travel history. The same photos that produce the number also give you:
- A map of every country you've visited.
- A stamp for every place in a digital passport.
- Every trip recovered from your camera roll.
So next time someone asks how many countries you've been to, you won't have to guess. You'll just know.
